Some of the things I will miss most are the things I never thought to take a photograph of.
An ordinary morning with my daughter. A conversation halfway through unpacking a delivery. Looking up from what I was doing and finding Claire already holding up something she knew I would love.
When you work together, those moments become part of your routine. You don’t always realise how much they mean until you begin imagining your days without them.
For me, that has been the hardest part of saying goodbye to Helen & Claire.
Sharing this business with my daughter has been a privilege. We brought different perspectives to it, but we always wanted the same thing: to help women find clothes they would enjoy wearing.
I’ve always paid attention to how something feels. Whether there is room to move comfortably. Whether a sleeve sits nicely. Whether a piece is easy to reach for on a morning when you have enough other things to think about.
Claire has an eye for the details I might overlook. An unexpected colour. A different shape. A way of putting familiar pieces together that makes them feel new again.
Choosing our collections gave us something we could build together, each bringing a little of ourselves.
We thought about everyday life as we made those choices. Lunch with an old friend. A family gathering. A chilly afternoon when a soft cardigan is exactly what you want. The pleasure of wearing something comfortable and still feeling thoughtfully dressed.
Now, we have reached a decision that has taken us time to accept.
I am ready to retire.
I still love clothing, and I will always have an opinion when Claire asks me what I think. But I’m ready for fewer responsibilities, quieter mornings, and more freedom to decide how to spend a day.
Claire is ready for a change, too. She wants more time with her family, with more of her attention available to the people she loves.
As her mother, I understand that.
We have talked through the possibilities, including whether she should continue on her own. In the end, we agreed that keeping the boutique going would mean asking her to take on more at the very moment she wants to make room for something else.
So, Helen & Claire will be closing, and we are holding a clearance sale with up to 60% off as we prepare to say goodbye.
Putting those words down still feels strange.
There is sadness in finishing something you have cared about. There is also relief in making a decision together and knowing you can support each other in what comes next.
Thank you for spending time with our collection and for choosing to shop with us. We know you have many places to turn, and your support matters.
We hope the pieces you take home will be worn often and enjoyed for a long time.
And although our working days together are coming to an end, I’m looking forward to spending time with Claire simply as her mum.
With love,
Helen & Claire
